Ukraine: the acting and the reality

The Sanremo Festival will be remembered as the "Festival of Two Presidents": President of the Republic Mattarella at the opening and Ukrainian President Zelensky at the closing. The latter does not appear in the picture, following protests raised in Italy. The substance, however, remains: Zelensky sends to the Sanremo Festival a speech that - announces the host Amadeus in charge of reading it - "is even translated by the Ukrainian Embassy in order to be precisely faithful to President Zelensky's writing."

The play Zelensky makes at the Festival is confronted, in this episode of Grandangolo TV, with the reality of what is happening in Ukraine, reconstructed through dramatic visual documentation.

What Zelensky's real role is revealed by a journalistic investigation published by The Guardian. In the 2019 presidential election, actor Zelensky, who became famous for his TV sitcom about the corruption of Ukraine's top political leadership, pledges to end the war in Donbass and clean up the oligarch-dominated system of government. He accuses wealthy Petro Poroshenko, the president, of hiding his assets in tax havens abroad.

Regarding his first pledge, once in the presidency, Zelensky's role is not to end the war in the Donbass, unleashed in 2014 against the Russian populations of this region, but to fuel the de facto NATO-directed war to strike Russia.

Regarding the second commitment to eliminate corruption, particularly the export of capital to tax havens, the facts of the investigation published by The Guardian speak for themselves. Zelensky is a co-owner of three companies with headquarters and capital in Belize and the British Virgin Islands (Central America) and Cyprus. Upon taking office as president, Zelensky "divests" two of his partners of his shares in these companies. And, once in office, he appoints the first partner as his special assistant and the second as head of Ukrainian intelligence.

P.S. Italian NGOs appealed against Zelensky's presence at the Sanremo Festival, Italy's best-known singing event watched on television by more than 10 million people. The appeal was joined in a few days by more than 100 thousand people. As a result of this pressure Zelensky will not speak on video but will send a speech to be read by the Festival host. On 11 February Italian NGOs organized a day of manifestation  in Sanremo, during which the enclosed video, which was broadcast on February 10 on the national TV channel Byoblu, was shown on a big screen.
